Ecademy Press Author Daniella Lerner in the news

September 18, 2008 on 1:18 pm | In Books, Authors | No Comments

Daniella Lerner with her bookSometimes you have to work hard at getting press attention and sometimes it comes to you. For Ecademy Press author Daniella Lerner (picture from ThisisLocalLondon) it was the latter. Charlotte Gray of the Borehamwood Times contacted us through the Ecademy Press website, we put her in touch with Daniella and shortly afterwards she appeared in the newspaper under the headline ‘Mum’s moving tale of the sons she lost’.

Daniella’s book Four More Tears tells a very personal story -

After IVF treatment, Mrs Lerner, 45, gave birth to quintuplets — four boys and a girl — in October 1988, when they were just 27-and-a-half weeks’ old.

Sadly, only the girl, Jodi — who will be 20 this year — survived the premature birth, albeit with complications that left her with learning difficulties.

Mrs Lerner, waited six years to commit her experiences to paper, but is now ready to explain how her traumatic ordeal, recalled in Four More Tears, changed her life forever. She hopes her zest for life will inspire others.

Writing the book too many years and now that it is published, Daniella remembers the writing process with mixed feelings -

She said: “Initially I wrote it because I thought it would be cathartic. Then I wrote it just for my babies — I didn’t think anything would come of it.

“A friend said I should write it as my journey, which I did. I have been through so much. It’s a state of mind. It’s not what the problem is, it’s how you deal with it.”

Every time she reads the book she cries, but Mrs Lerner is determined to show how strong she is.

Four More Tears was published in August 2008 priced at £9.99 and is available at Ecademy Press and online at Amazon, WH SMith and Tesco Direct. It can also be ordered through book shops.

Ecademy Press is always looking for books about Personal Development and Personal Journeys like this. Find out more about how to get your book published with Ecademy Press.

Ecademy Press Author and Director in ‘The Director’ Magazine

September 14, 2008 on 9:28 pm | In Announcements, Books, Authors | No Comments

Mindy Gibbins-KleinThis month, both our co-founder and Director, Mindy Gibbins-Klein (pictured right) and the author of The Effective Entrepreneur, John Caines are quoted in an article in The Director Magazine alongside Theo Paphitis, Duncan Bannatyne and Rachael Elnaugh of Dragon’s Den fame and David Gold, Chairman of Birmingham City Football Club.

And that begs a question. Why does someone who has been successful in business take his or her eye off the balance sheet for months or even years in order to spend quality time with a word processor or ghost writer. It probably isn’t the money. As Mindy Gibbins-Klein, who works with entrepreneurs to develop and publish books through her Book Midwife service and Ecademy Press imprint, points out: “The average business book sells about 2,000 copies and publishers think they’ve done well when they hit the 15,000 mark.”

As we point out to prospective authors, having a book that fits your expertise can be more valuable than other forms of promotion such as advertising in a glossy magazine.

So why do it? Well, the first thing that has to be said is that having a book on the market—particularly a book that notches up healthy sales—can do wonders for both your reputation and profile. “Writing a book changed my life,” says Mike Southon, co-writer of The Beermat Entrepreneur, which drew on his experience of starting, running and selling a company. To date the book has sold a credible 75,000 copies but Southon acknowledges that the real benefit had little to do with royalty cheques. “It gave me a whole new career as a public speaker and a columnist,” he adds.

Indeed, career development is often a pretty powerful motivator. For instance, business mentor, serial company chairman, investor and author of The Effective Entrepreneur, John Caines, has no illusions about selling thousands of copies, but he sees the title as something that fits into his overall career plan. The advice it offers to independent owners is in sync with the advisory services that he provides for the same group. As such it is both a reputation builder and a means to deepen his relationship with new and prospective partners and clients. “I didn’t write the book to make millions or even to use directly as a marketing tool to win new clients, but it is part of a jigsaw. It’s helped me in my work with clients, not least because I get a lot of feedback from people who have read it.”

He walked up stairs, assuming all he needed was a good night’s sleep. Yet within 24 hours he had collapsed and was flat on his back on the landing, paralysed and in excruciating pain.

Once Bitten - How Nigel Vardy climbed back up his mountain

February 21, 2008 on 2:54 pm | In Books | No Comments

The best way to introduce this book is to let the readers speak. Here are two comments, from the book cover, about this extraordinary book and its extraordinary author. Several of our conversations with him during the publication process took place on his mobile phone atop a mountain (we were in our warm office, of course). I know it is a cliche but - you WILL be inspired!

An inspirational read that will take you to one of the last great frontiers, the mighty Mt McKinley, and an expedition that not only challenged a team of British Mountaineers both physically, mentally and morally, but a trip that nearly cost them their lives.

This book takes you on a journey through life changing decisions, both on the Mountain, and on Nigel’s long road to recovery after sustaining severe frostbite. His steely determination to battle through the aftermath of what can only be described as an epic expedition, put his life back together and go on to enjoy such fantastic Adventures despite his disability is an inspiration to us all.
Rob Edmonds - Mountain Spirit

Once Bitten is not just another ‘climber gets stuck on mountain but survives to tell the tale’ book. The gripping accounts of the summit attempt, realisation that something is going horribly wrong and the rescue are all there, but the other half of the book is all about the journey Nigel has made since those events in 1999 - the other mountains he has climbed and his refusal to disappear into the crevasses of self pity and helplessness that appeared along the way. By sharing his experiences he provides food for thought and hopes he can help others. As he says dramatic events may mean expectations have to be moved but they don’t have to be lowered. We should all remember that life is for living.
Carolyn Budding - Terra Nova Equipment

Nigel’s story was filmed as part of the ‘Alive’ series by Darlow Smithson Productions for Channel 4 / Discovery Channel.

A Solitary Confinement on the BBC

January 28, 2008 on 5:00 pm | In Books | No Comments

Robin Sheppard is talking to Claudia Hammond on today’s Health Check on BBC World Service. In the interview he talks about the speed with which he moved from the first signs of a ‘flu like’ infection to almost complete paralysis from Guillain-Barre syndrome and about his recovery. He also describes how he wrote the book A Solitary Confinement using voice activated software and how he coped with the corrections he needed to make (take a listen to hear about that).

Health Check went out today (Monday) and is repeated during the week. The listen again link is no longer active. You can now listen to the interview on Robin’s own site.

Robin’s book can be bought from Robin’s website or from Amazon (UK!US) price £10.99 ($18.99).

5.0 out of 5 stars Humor as teacher, 23 Jan 2008
By Amused Reader (Portland, OR, USA) - See all my reviews
Insight comes in many forms, and humor is a remarkably powerful means of delivering searing truths about illness and disability in ways that we can stomach. While deprived of many of his senses for longer than the rest of us can imagine, Robin Sheppard never lost his keen sense of humor or his amazing powers of observation. The result is a rare book that both teaches and entertains in a way that is guaranteed to change lives.

4.0 out of 5 stars A magnetic read, 22 Jan 2008
By Bazzer (Surrey, UK) - See all my reviews
If ever a book can take you on a personal journey from paralysis to a semblance of normality, this is it. Robin describes his tortuous journey of determination with humour, mostly black. Having approached the reading of the book as a ten pager a night before bed, I found the content magnetic and read it within a few nights.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bob bob bobbing along…, 22 Jan 2008
By FAJP (London E1) - See all my reviews
Make time for this humbling and inspiring book written by an author who manages to retain perspective and a laconic sense of humour throughout a truly terrifying and lonely personal ordeal. A genuinely uplifting read.
